Evaluation in Practice

This section includes examples of applications of the Engage with Impact Toolkit and it's corresponding resources, as well as other examples of engagement evaluation work. View the examples below for more information on how you can use the toolkit to build, improve, and evaluate your engagement practices.

Evaluating Engagement in a Research Network

She also reflects on the value of evaluation and the importance of evaluating process and real-world impacts on patient partners, researchers, and the broader health system.

Topics include:

  • Why evaluating patient engagement is essential

  • Co-designing evaluation with patient and family partners

  • Applying the Engage with Impact Toolkit’s modules to build a strong evaluation process

  • Lessons learned and advice for anyone involved or interested in patient, family, or community engagement

Casebook of Public and Patient Engagement Evaluation in Health Research, Health Systems and Policy

Released by the PPEC in Fall 2025, this casebook includes ten cases reporting on the evaluation of patient engagement in a variety of research and health system settings. Cases cover diverse sectors, patient populations, and communities including youth mental health, brain and neurodevelopmental health research, preclinical stroke studies, pediatric rare disease research, aging populations, chronic pain research, primary care data communication, and research priorities for African, Caribbean and Black communities. Most of the cases are centred around the evaluation of patient engagement in various research networks and projects, however, some have a broader health system focus.

Each case offers details on:

  • Description of public/patient engagement activity

  • Description of evaluation process

  • Outline of evaluation results

  • Key successes and challenges
